Oftentimes we have the best intentions when we invite friends to class. I was one of those friends last week when I agreed to take a class with a teacher I knew nothing about. Even though I know yoga and have taught for over a decade, each teacher has different expectations, some may not encourage modifications which can be a bit awkward for the student with limitations. Trying anything new can be intimidating! So I went in with an intention of being open to what the teacher had to offer, but with my mind set on listening to my limitations first and foremost. It's almost as if I were dedicating that practice to all of those who are new to yoga, have taken a break for years or have been invited to a class that they are unsure of. Zoom is a great place to start, I was thinking that as I was on my mat in the studio space, eyes watching me being a teacher/student feeling like I was under a spotlight. In video classes, new people can be "hidden" and just watch, they can opt out of the harder stuff and say "maybe next time," or do completely different poses or exercises while I am offering something that doesn't quite work for them. I have some folks who will mix in Pilates on their own, do their PT exercises, or add weights. We are less conscious of what people think of us on video compared to an open classroom making it a great opportunity to jump in and try a new class! Safety first, though - please always listen to your body!
I wanted to write this in honor of our friends that we have invited to class and have not tried this (or any new class!). Many new folks have been removed from my mailing list as I transition homes. But I thought I'd write this while it's on my mind if anyone would like to share it. * Each teacher has a different vibe, choose one that you feel comfortable with! What can you expect in my Zoom Yoga Classes:
